Delhi Building Collapse Claims 11 Lives, Rescue Operations Continue in Mustafabad
New Delhi | April 20, 2025
A tragic building collapse in Mustafabad’s Shakti Vihar has left 11 people dead and several others injured, after a four-storey structure came crashing down around 3 am on Sunday. The incident occurred while most residents were asleep, leaving many trapped under debris.

Overnight Rescue Operations Save Lives
Rescue teams from the Delhi Fire Services, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), and local volunteers worked through the night using cranes and thermal cameras. Eleven people were rescued alive and rushed to a nearby hospital. Five remain hospitalized, while six have been discharged after treatment.
Structural Tampering Suspected
Though an official cause is yet to be confirmed, local residents claim a dividing wall on the ground floor was removed, weakening the structure’s pillars. The building was estimated to be 8 to 10 years old, with ongoing pillar work at the time of collapse.
“We kept saying it was shaking after the rain, but nobody came,” said one local.
Sehjhad, who lost two young nephews, said, “Two school-going boys are gone. Everything — gold, cash — is under the rubble.”
Recurring Safety Concerns
The tragedy follows closely after a similar collapse in Madhu Vihar, where one person died during a dust storm. These back-to-back incidents highlight the urgent need for enforcement of building safety regulations.
Authorities Respond with Assurances
Delhi Minister Kapil Mishra blamed unauthorised construction and criticized MCD officials for negligence.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta posted on X, “Strict action will be taken against the culprits. Investigations have been ordered.”
As investigations proceed, questions are being raised about monitoring and accountability in rapidly growing urban colonies.
