NASA Celebrates National Astronaut Day

In a message shared on X (formerly Twitter), NASA reflected on Shepard’s pioneering flight on May 5, 1961, and the generations of astronauts who have followed in his footsteps. Since that historic moment, NASA has trained 23 astronaut classes and is set to welcome the 24th later this year.
“This #NationalAstronautDay, we honor those who have braved the unknown for the sake of humankind,” the post read, acknowledging the bravery and dedication of the men and women who continue to push the boundaries of space exploration.
As NASA prepares for the next wave of missions — including lunar exploration under the Artemis program — the agency takes this moment to celebrate the past while looking forward to the future of human spaceflight.
